Lithuania, now a small country with an area significantly less than the American state of West Virginia, was once a European super power controlling not only what is now Lithuania but also Belarus and most of the Ukraine. During that time it was allied with Poland through a shared monarchy.
The Lithuanians are one of the Baltic peoples, a branch of the Indo-Europeans, along with the Latvians and the Prussians. In the early part of the 13th century the Baltic tribes and the Estonians were conquered by the Knights of the Sword, a band of Germanic marauders. Later the Knights of the Sword joined the Teutonic Knights, another band of Germanic marauders.
The Lithuanians held out longest because their territory was covered with forest.
